Inclement Weather Policies

Due to swimming in an outdoor facility the following steps will be used to determine whether practice will be altered or cancelled.

Cancellations will be sent over email and/or text messaging services. Other than for storms, you should assume practice is being held.

Cold Weather

Due to the colder weather we have had over the years, we advise all groups bring appropriate clothing for dryland activities. These activities may include: running, various exercises on the pool deck (push-ups, crawling on hands and knees, ab exercises, etc) or even other games in the grassy areas near the pool. All swimmers should be prepared for these activities daily. There may be days where the water is too cold, cloudy or otherwise unfit for swimming and we may need to make necessary adjustments. Proper footwear (non-sandals) should be brought to practice daily.

Cold-water determinations will be made on deck. Unless the weather has been continuously at or below 50F overnight.

Rain

We’re already getting wet, we will practice in light rain. The equipment/storage locker will not be used for equipment or bag storage for athletes. Athletes with large amounts of gear should store that in a car, or bring rain gear to cover it in case of rain.

Heavier rain decisions will be made by the lifeguard staff and coaches. The rule in place is, “if we cannot see the bottom of the pool, we cannot swim.” If practice is cancelled, we will notify you over email and/or text messages.

Thunder Storms

If there is an active thunderstorm 30-minutes prior to a schedule workout, we will not practice. Notices will go out over text and/or email. If thunderstorms are forecasted but it is not storming, please be ready to pick-up your swimmer as soon as possible. We will send a message out as soon as we make the determination that practice is cancelled.

Meet Days

If there are storms on a meet day, we will attempt to reschedule the meet, but we may also MOVE the meet to an indoor location. Milan and Southwestern-Hanover are willing to host our two home meets should weather be a factor. If this changes your entry status, please let the coaches know as soon as possible.

If a meet is beyond 50% complete (event 43) the meet will be scored and finalized. We may wait it out if the weather moves in and out quickly during a competition. But all parents and athletes should leave the pool deck immediately and find shelter in their car in the event of a heavy downpour and/or thunderstorm.
